Are hotel prices on Booking.com cheaper when you are in the country?

Not as a rule. In our checks the hotel's own country was never the single lowest location. Why, what changes in Peru, and how to find the lowest price for the same hotel.

Key takeaways

  • Being in the country does not reliably lower the price on Booking; the hotel's own country can be lower, the same or higher.
  • In Arbitrica's price checks of 6 hotels searched from their own country, the local search was never the single lowest location; for the Taj Mahal Palace in Mumbai it was the highest ($1,238, against $1,066 from New Zealand).
  • Hotels can set rates by traveller country: Booking's developer documentation lists geo or country rates, available based on the traveller's country (checked on November 3, 2026).
  • In Peru, hotel rates carry 18% IGV for residents, and foreign non-resident guests staying under 60 days can be exempt, so being there as a local usually means paying more.
  • Research across 1,000 hotels found a lower price in about 80% of countries, with a typical gap of 20-40%, so the lowest country changes from hotel to hotel.

Short answer

Not as a rule. Booking can show a different price depending on the traveller's country, because hotels can set rates per country, but the hotel's own country is not reliably the lowest. In Arbitrica's price checks it was never the single lowest location, and sometimes it was the highest. Taxes can also work against locals: in Peru, residents pay 18% IGV on hotel rates that foreign tourists can be exempt from.

What our price checks show

In Arbitrica's price checks (same hotel, same dates, totals in USD), 6 hotels were also searched from the country the hotel is in:

HotelFrom the hotel's countryFrom the UKLowest found
The Taj Mahal Palace, Mumbai$1,238 (India)$1,210$1,066 (New Zealand)
Hotel NYX Cancun$631 (Mexico)$558$558 (UK, New Zealand, Hong Kong)
White House Hotel Istanbul$709 (Turkey)$1,066$708 (India)
Ravel Hotel, New York$945 (USA)$948$783 (Mexico)
Vibe Hotel Sydney Darling Harbour$791 (Australia)$791$779 (USA)
Ostay Vermillion Namba, Osaka$148 (Japan)$148$148 (all 5 locations)

The local search was lower than the UK for Istanbul and, by $3, for New York, higher for Mumbai and Cancun, and the same for Sydney and Osaka. It was never the single lowest location. Across a far larger set, research across 1,000 hotels demonstrated a lower price in about 80% of countries, with a typical gap of 20-40%.

Why your country changes the price on Booking

  • Country rates. Booking's developer documentation lists geo or country rates as "rates available based on the traveller's country" (checked on November 3, 2026). A hotel can offer one market a lower rate and leave another at the standard price.
  • Dynamic pricing. Prices also move with demand, dates and the seller's algorithms, so the same hotel can change between two searches an hour apart.
  • Different sites, different rates. Prices and available rooms differ by site as well as by country, so the lowest total may be on another booking site.
  • Taxes and how they are shown. Some countries tax residents and visitors differently, and a site may show the total with or without local taxes.

More on this: why Booking prices differ by country.

Are hotel prices in Peru on Booking.com cheaper when you are in the country?

Usually not for locals, and being physically in Peru does not lower the price for a visitor. Hotel rates in Peru are subject to 18% IGV, the general sales tax. Foreign or non-resident guests who stay less than 60 days can be exempt if they show the required document at check-in, as hotels state on their own rate pages (for example Dazzler Lima San Isidro by Wyndham, checked on November 3, 2026). SUNAT, Peru's tax authority, treats accommodation for non-domiciled guests as an export of services (report 175-2013).

So a Peruvian resident booking a hotel in Peru usually pays the 18% that a foreign tourist does not. For a visitor, what matters is your passport and residency at check-in, not where you search from. Check whether the total on Booking includes IGV, and keep your passport and entry record ready at the desk.

Resident and local rates

Some hotels publish resident rates for people who live in the country. They usually require local ID or an address at check-in, so they are only a saving if you qualify. Even hotel chains treat them as a separate category: LoyaltyLobby reported in May 2025 that Marriott's Best Rate Guarantee excludes rates that need a specific residency, ID or credit card. For a traveller, the useful question is not "where am I?" but "which country's price for this hotel can I book?"

Searching from Australia or Thailand, or any other country, follows the same logic: no single country is lowest for every hotel. See which country gives the lowest hotel price.

How to check before you book

  1. Note the final total for your room, with taxes and fees, from where you are now.
  2. Check the same room, dates and cancellation policy from several other countries and on more than one site.
  3. Read what the total includes: local taxes, resident-only conditions and the currency.
  4. Book a rate with free cancellation and keep checking until the deadline, because prices move after you book.

Checking 195 countries by hand is humanly impossible. Arbitrica is a personal AI agent that does it at checkout: it checks the same hotel from 195 countries, finds the lowest price in the world for it, and automatically prepares everything so you only review and pay. After you book, the approach Arbitrica uses keeps re-checking the price until the cancellation window ends.

Frequently asked questions

Are hotel prices on Booking.com cheaper when you are in the country?

Not as a rule. In Arbitrica's price checks of 6 hotels searched from their own country, the local search was never the single lowest location, and for the Taj Mahal Palace in Mumbai it was the highest. The lowest country changes from hotel to hotel.

Are hotel prices in Peru on Booking.com cheaper when you are in the country?

Not for residents. Hotel rates in Peru carry 18% IGV, and foreign or non-resident guests staying less than 60 days can be exempt if they show the required document at check-in. Being in Peru does not lower the price for a visitor; the exemption depends on residency.

Why does Booking show a different price in another country?

Hotels can set rates by traveller country, and Booking's developer documentation lists geo or country rates, available based on the traveller's country. Dynamic pricing, the site and how taxes are shown also change the total.

Is it cheaper to book hotels on Booking from Australia or Thailand?

It depends on the hotel. No single country is lowest everywhere; research across 1,000 hotels found a lower price in about 80% of countries, with a typical gap of 20-40%, but in a different country for different hotels.

Can I book a resident or local rate as a visitor?

Only if you meet the conditions. Resident rates usually need local ID or an address at check-in, and a hotel can charge the standard rate if you do not qualify. Read the rate conditions before you book.
