Expedia price drop refund: what Expedia covers and what to do instead

Expedia's Hotel Price Guarantee has ended and its Price Drop Protection covers selected flights only. Here is how to still pay less for the same hotel.

Key takeaways

  • Expedia's Hotel Price Guarantee ended on July 28, 2026, so Expedia no longer refunds a hotel price drop after booking.
  • Expedia's Price Drop Protection covers selected flights only, and only counts lower prices on Expedia itself.
  • With a refundable hotel rate you can rebook the identical hotel at a lower price and cancel the original before the deadline.
  • Always confirm the new booking before you cancel the original, and compare totals with all taxes and fees.
  • Arbitrica searches the same hotel from 195 countries at checkout and prepares everything at the lowest price on Earth.

If the price of your Expedia hotel drops after you book, Expedia will not refund the difference. Its Hotel Price Guarantee, the program that once paid members when they found a lower rate after booking, ended on July 28, 2026. What still works is simpler and more reliable: book a refundable rate, keep checking, rebook the identical hotel at the lower price before free cancellation ends, and search the same hotel from other countries before you pay.

Does Expedia refund a hotel price drop?

Not anymore. Expedia and Hotels.com used to offer a Hotel Price Guarantee to One Key members: if you found a lower publicly available rate for the same hotel after booking, you could claim the difference. AwardWallet and Upgraded Points both reported that Expedia eliminated the Hotel Price Guarantee on Expedia and Hotels.com effective July 28, 2026, as part of a wider overhaul of One Key, and Upgraded Points noted there is no replacement.

This was the second time Expedia stepped back from price matching. Skift reported that in October 2017 Expedia-branded sites dropped their long-standing promise to match a lower price found on other public sites within 24 hours of booking, which also came with a $50 travel coupon in the US. Old guides and forum posts still describe these programs, so if you read that "Expedia will match the price", check the date first.

Tip

Old Expedia help pages about the Best Price Guarantee can still be found online. The terms that apply are the ones in force when you book, so do not rely on a guarantee page you cannot find linked from your current booking.

What Expedia's Price Drop Protection covers (and what it does not)

Expedia still sells something called Price Drop Protection, and it causes a lot of confusion because the name sounds like a hotel refund. According to Expedia's own Price Drop Protection pages, it applies only to selected flights:

  • Standard Price Drop Protection is an add-on you pay for on eligible flights. If the fare for the exact same flight drops on Expedia, Expedia says it refunds the difference after your trip.
  • One Key Price Drop Protection is included for One Key Gold and Platinum members on selected flights booked in the Expedia app. Any drop is paid as OneKeyCash after the trip, which Expedia's terms say is not redeemable for cash and can only be used on Expedia, Hotels.com and Vrbo.

Both versions check the price automatically every 24 hours, and both only look at prices on Expedia itself. A lower fare on an airline's own site or on another travel site does not count. The terms also exclude Member Prices and flight plus hotel bundles, and changing the flight can cancel the protection.

None of this covers a standalone hotel booking. If you booked a hotel on Expedia and the rate falls, Price Drop Protection does nothing for you.

How to get a lower price after booking an Expedia hotel

Without a guarantee, the price you pay depends on one thing: whether your booking still has free cancellation. If it does, a price drop is money you can claim yourself by rebooking. If it cannot, your options are much weaker.

Illustrative: the price of the same hotel keeps moving after you book. A drop before free cancellation ends can be rebooked.

If you booked a refundable rate

  1. Find your cancellation deadlineOpen the booking in My Trips and note the exact date and time free cancellation ends, including the time zone shown.
  2. Check the same hotel againSearch the same hotel, dates, room type, board and cancellation terms. Compare the total with all taxes and fees, not the nightly rate.
  3. Book the lower price firstMake the new booking and wait for the confirmation email with a confirmation number.
  4. Then cancel the originalCancel the first booking only after the new one is confirmed, and keep the cancellation email until the refund reaches your card.

The new booking does not have to be on Expedia. The identical hotel may be lower at another travel site, at the hotel chain's own site, or from another country. What matters is that the hotel, dates, room, inclusions and cancellation terms match, so that you are moving to the same stay at a lower total.

If you booked a non-refundable rate

A non-refundable booking cannot be rebooked without losing what you paid. You can contact Expedia customer service, give your itinerary number and ask whether anything can be done, but with the Hotel Price Guarantee gone there is no published program that obliges Expedia to adjust the price. Treat any goodwill credit as a bonus, not a plan. For future trips, this is the strongest argument for paying a little more on day one for a flexible rate.

Refundable rates are your price guarantee now

A refundable rate does what the old guarantee promised, and more. The guarantee only paid when you found a lower public price and filed a claim, and it paid on the terms Expedia set. A refundable booking lets you act on any lower price for the identical hotel, wherever you find it, until the deadline passes. The guide to rebooking a hotel at a lower price covers the full process, including what to check before you cancel.

The weakness is effort. You have to remember to check, repeat the search with identical terms, and do it again every few days until the deadline. Most people check once or twice and stop. Our article on hotel price drops after booking explains why prices keep moving after you pay.

Multiple-time arbitrage after you payAfter a refundable booking the search repeats until the free-cancellation window ends; a lower price is booked and confirmed first, and only then is the original cancelled.Multiple-time arbitrage after you pay1Refundable bookingFree cancellation untila set date›2Search repeatsFrom 195 countries, over time›3Lower price foundIdentical, taxes andfees included›4New bookingconfirmedThen the original iscancelled
Multiple-time arbitrage: the search repeats after a refundable booking. The new booking is confirmed first; only then is the original cancelled.

Arbitrica developed a mechanism for this. Arbitrica's approach repeats the search for the same hotel after you book, until free cancellation ends. When the identical hotel becomes available at a lower total, at a different provider, a new booking is prepared and confirmed first, and only then is the original cancelled. You review and pay.

Search the same hotel from other countries

Waiting for a drop is one route. The other is to find the lower price before you book at all. The same hotel, on the same dates, can come in at very different prices depending on which country you search from, because different countries get access to different inventory, channels, local rates and promotions.

In a test of 1,000 hotels searched from 100 countries, 80% of countries showed a lower price than the traveler's own country, and the typical gap was 20-40%. That is often far more than any single price drop after booking. Our list of the cheapest countries to book hotels from explains why some countries tend to come out lower.

Checking this by hand with a VPN is slow: one country at a time, with the risk that the total changes at checkout or the terms are not quite the same. Arbitrica is a personal AI agent that meets you at checkout, searches the same hotel from 195 countries, validates that it is identical with all taxes and fees included, and prepares everything at the lowest price on Earth. You review and pay. See how it works for the full flow.

Expedia price match: what to say if you contact support

If you still want to ask Expedia about a lower price, be precise. Have your itinerary number, the exact hotel name, dates, room type and cancellation terms, and a screenshot of the lower total with taxes and fees. Ask a direct question: can the booking be adjusted, or can it be cancelled without a penalty so you can rebook? Do not cancel anything on the strength of a chat promise until you have it confirmed in writing.

The same applies to Hotels.com, which shared the same guarantee and ended it on the same date. The guide to the Hotels.com price guarantee covers the details for that site.

A simple plan for your next Expedia hotel booking

  1. Choose free cancellationUnless the saving on a non-refundable rate is large and your plans are fixed, pay for flexibility.
  2. Search from other countries before you payThe same hotel is often 5-30% cheaper elsewhere, and the biggest gaps appear between countries.
  3. Write down the cancellation deadlineSet a reminder a few days before it, plus a few checks in between.
  4. Rebook only identical staysSame hotel, room, dates, inclusions and cancellation terms, compared on the full total.
  5. Confirm before you cancelThe new booking must be confirmed before the original is cancelled.

The same thinking applies to companies booking for teams. A travel manager or operations manager who books refundable rates for a trade show and keeps repricing them until the deadline turns price movement into a budget saving. Research showed that people earn on average $47 per hotel booking with Arbitrica, and up to $3,000 a year.
